Residents of the city of Kasimov, in the Ryazan region, asked the cult American director Quentin Tarantino to save the Pasternak House from destruction. They posted a video of the statement on YouTube on February 10. On this day, the famous Russian poet was born.
The Kasimovites accompanied the video with a letter in English. “Dear Mr. Tarantino, we are aware of your love and devotion to Russian literature and your special spiritual connection with Boris Pasternak. We have seen photographs of you visiting his grave… As you can see, the house is in a deplorable state. Part of the building burned down. Now no one lives in it, and in the cold season homeless people come here to warm themselves. We want to preserve this house as a piece of that pre-revolutionary Russia that was dear to the heart of Boris Pasternak, and turn it into a museum,” the Kasimovites wrote.
They stressed that it was embarrassing to seek help from Mr. Tarantino, but the local authorities left them no choice – officials claim that they have no money for the reconstruction of the building.
The authors of the letter specified that this was the house of Osip Kaufman, the uncle of Boris Pasternak, who once worked as the head physician of the Kasimov hospital. Some literary scholars believe that Doctor Zhivago was copied from Kaufman, and Kasimov himself may be the prototype of the town of Yuryatin from the novel Doctor Zhivago.
