During the closed part of the talks between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his British counterpart Liz Truss in Moscow, she tried to challenge the belonging of the Voronezh and Rostov regions to the Russian Federation.

According to Kommersant, citing its sources, the British Foreign Secretary told the Russian Foreign Minister about the need to withdraw Russian armed forces from the Ukrainian border. Lavrov indicated that the military were on Russian territory.

When Truss continued to insist, Lavrov asked her: “You recognize the sovereignty of Russia over the Rostov and Voronezh regions?”

“The UK will never recognize Russian sovereignty over these regions,” the Foreign Minister said.

Deborah Bonnert, the British Ambassador to the Russian Federation, came to Truss’s aid and explained to Mrs. Truss that it was all about Russian regions.

Truss herself later explained to RBC that it seemed to her that Minister Lavrov was talking about part of Ukraine.

According to Moscow, the negotiations were not productive. Liz Truss once again stated that she considers it necessary to withdraw Russian troops from the border with Ukraine.
