Climate change: Experts estimate an increase of 2.7 degrees in Ecuador between 2040 and 2070

Ecuadorian experts warned this Wednesday of an increase of about 2.7 degrees Celsius in the temperature of the country in the medium term, between 2040 and 2070caused by climate change.

The presence of climate change is real, we live it and in the future it will be exacerbated”, affirmed Bolívar Erazo, executive director of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi), during a virtual meeting organized by the Ministry of the Environment.

According to Erazo, who was speaking before a group of professors and other officials, in the distant future, that is, between 2070 and 2100, it is expected that the environmental temperature rise about 4.4 degrees Celsius in the Andean country.

Regarding rainfall, he foresaw an increase of 8% in the medium term, which will cause other problems due to the increase in water, and 17% in the long term.

And he insisted on his appearance in actions to respond adequately to the natural phenomena to come, including the creation of an early warning system “to be prepared in the managing these changes in water quantity”.

In September, the Ministry of the Environment launched the National Plan for the Transition towards Decarbonization, which seeks to generate alternatives in the management of long-term climate change in the different sectors of the national territory.

According to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), In Ecuador, 40% of the glaciers have been lost in the last 30 years. and two of the seven glacier covers are at “imminent risk” due to climate change.

For Karina Barrera, Undersecretary for Climate Change, this is a phenomenon that is no longer a cliché and to counteract its effects it is necessary to work on education because “we all do our part.”

Liliana Troncoso, an academic from the Central University, referred to the flood that affected the sectors of La Comuna and La Gasca, in the north center of Quito, last weekensuring that it could be the effect of climate change, in which there is also some kind of human responsibility.

The human has to recognize its position as a host” in the environment that surrounds us and must “seek how to incorporate prevention, preparation, mitigation, education and public policy measures” in order to achieve adequate coexistence with the territory, he recommended in his speech. (I)
