Indonesia has decided to purchase 42 Rafale multirole fighters from France. French Defense Minister Florence Parly wrote about this in Twitter.

According to her, the strategic partnership between the two countries will thus be strengthened in the field of defense, since Indonesia plays a key role in the Association of Southeast Asian and Indo-Pacific Nations. Parley added that Indonesia is the second in the region to acquire French-made fighter jets, India was the first. Also, according to her, the countries cooperate in the field of submarines.

According to AFP, Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto has already announced the signing of a contract for the purchase of the first six fighters, and subsequently the country will acquire 36 more.

At the end of last year, Indonesia “with a heavy heart” refused to purchase Su-35 multirole fighters from Russia. At the same time, it was reported that the country was considering the purchase of French Rafale and American Boeing F-15 EX.

Recall that information about the likely plans of the Indonesian Air Force to acquire 35 Rafale aircraft and 15 F-15 EX aircraft appeared for the first time in 2020. Russian representatives have stated that they are ready to supply 4++ generation Su-35 multirole fighters to Indonesia, despite pressure from some states.
