Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said the country retains the right to apply for NATO membership depending on the situation. About it writes RIA Novosti.

“As noted in the Finnish Government’s report on foreign and security policy, released in the fall of 2020, Finland’s foreign, security and defense policy is based on providing room for maneuver and opportunities for choice in the national plan,” the head of the department said.

According to Haavisto, based on this document, Helsinki retains the possibility of applying for membership in the alliance. He emphasized that when making decisions, the real situation is always considered, taking into account the changes that are taking place in the field of security in the international context.

In January, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said the Finnish government was not considering joining NATO any time soon. Prior to this, Haavisto spoke out with a refutation of plans to join the alliance. According to him, Helsinki has no plans to change course in international politics.
