The process for the Municipality of Manta to manage the airport was launched this Wednesday, once the General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC) delivered the resolution to transfer administrative competence.
William Birket, director of the DGAC, pointed out that the resolution indicates that this entity will have the operation and administrative control of the General Eloy Alfaro airport until all the administrative acts and necessary actions are carried out by the municipality.
This decision will be legally complemented by the issuance of a presidential decree that reaffirms the decision of the DGAC. Civil Aviation will continue to manage air navigation areas and services.
“Indeed, the municipality is the owner of the Eloy Alfaro airport, and it will know what to do with it, if it leases it, if it concessions it. The mayor is and will be the one who directs everything and can project this situation from now on”, declared Birket.
Agustín Intriago, mayor of Manta, said that experienced people will be sought in the country to carry out the administration of the air terminal for now and project it to the new international delegation or concession process, although there is still no defined date for the start of the process. of call.
It even hinted that the Asian company Korean Airport Corporation (KAC) would no longer be the only one with the possibility of being awarded the concession process, as it has been in recent years, that is, as the only one interested in being awarded that process.
Government began process to transfer the Manta airport to the Municipality
Even in April of last year, the then President of the Republic signed executive decree 1287, announcing the administrative delegation of the airport to KAC, and where the Korean state airport announced an investment of 253 million dollars. during the period of the delegation process and that the profits would go directly to the State, with the possibility that some of those profits would remain for Manta.
Intriago pointed out that now, in addition to this delegation of powers to the Municipality of Manta, it would be the first time that this city obtains 100% of the profits, and that a process can even be generated to delegate the air terminal without only the KAC participate.
“For us the KAC was important by virtue of the time factor, because there was the state of exceptionality, on the one hand; and, on the other hand, it was the only proposal. But if the time factor is going to be on an equal footing with any other proposal, well, it is definitely the possibility of opening the range and that they come in freedom of competences to determine the greatest benefit for the city”, indicated Intriago.
