US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu held telephone conversations on coordinating the actions of the two countries and NATO unity amid the tense situation around Ukraine. As follows from the information posted on the website of the US State Department, both countries are monitoring the actions of the Russian Federation, which has been suspected of preparing a winter invasion of Ukraine for the fourth month in a row.

Blinken stressed the US and Turkey’s shared commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and praised Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for supporting a diplomatic settlement.

Turkey, which is a member of NATO and a business partner of Russia at the same time, tries to balance between the interests of the two sides. Thus, Turkey not only supplies Bayraktar drones to Ukraine, but also expands the production of attack drones near Kiev, while stipulating that Bayraktar should be used exclusively for defensive purposes. At the same time, Turkey is buying Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems, risking US sanctions, and the Turkish president assures that he is ready to facilitate a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky and help reduce tensions between Russia and Ukraine through diplomatic means.
