Times Square proposes a PVC love for Valentine’s Day

Nueva York (EFE) .

“We wanted to think about how something that is not normally seen, such as PVC pipes, or that is taken for granted, could be used to raise something,” the designer of the installation, Jieun Yang, whose proposal was the winner, assured Efe. of the contest that the administrators of Times Square have been organizing for 14 years to celebrate love for Valentine’s Day.

Four columns, each made up of four pink pipes, rise from the ground and support a billowing white cloud made of pieces of pipe. sectioned, designed to reflect the flashes of the dozens of luminous panels that flood the square on all sides.

For Yang, the choice of this ordinary material responds to “an idea of continuous love. (Love) may not always be the greatest gesture, but it is that love that you know will always be there, that connecting force that allows you to be yourself and explore.”

For this reason, he explains that the four pillars that support his work, entitled Bloom (Flowering), represent the strength of that love “rooted in the earth”, which allows the rest of the structure and “its luminosity” to remain standing.

Total, there are about 800 portions of PVC pipeeach of which is surrounded by six others, which also represent for the designer the idea of ”collective love and resilience”, because “if one of them were removed, everything could start to wobble a little”.

The director of curators of the Museum of Art and Design in New York, Elissa Auther, who participated in the selection of the winning work, stressed at the opening that the work is “a tribute to collective love and a reminder that we are all united , and that each of us has the ability to uplift and support the community as a whole.”

Yang also relishes the idea that the iconic Times Square is a place chosen by many couples to propose, renew their vows or even get married.

“Next Monday, on Valentine’s Day, some people will renew their vows, will they marry or will they hear the question ‘Will you marry me?’ And in a way, it was a lot of fun to work with this idea, “said the artist.

But in addition, he hopes that his installation can bring a ray of hope to tourists, onlookers and passers-by through the reflection of the lights of the square in the PVC cloud.

“As you go through it, if you look up, you’ll see that each tube starts to glow with different types of light and reflections. That’s a reminder that, even in the darkest moments, even in the most difficult moments of our lives, there are moments of relief, of joy, small moments of happiness and small victories”, concludes.

The response of the public seems divergent and while a curious passer-by stops near the installation and spontaneously expresses to Efe her enthusiasm for the installation, another passer-by, not so convinced, shows his relief to learn that he will only remain in the square until next March 9.
