NATO should regularly reassess its strategy towards Russia and adjust it if the security situation deteriorates, say German, French and Polish leaders Olaf Scholz, Emmanuel Macron and Andrzej Duda.

In a joint statement following the Weimar Triangle summit in Berlin, the heads of state stressed their readiness for “meaningful and result-oriented security talks” with Russia.

The statement emphasizes that in order to guarantee peace and security in the Euro-Atlantic space, the three countries intend to continue close consultations with EU partners and NATO allies. At the same time, the alliance needs to “regularly review its defense and deterrence strategies” and adjust as necessary, including as part of NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence initiative.

Recall that at the end of 2021, Russia published drafts of a treaty with the United States and an agreement with NATO on security guarantees. On January 26, the US and NATO sent written responses to these proposals to Moscow.
