The Democratic Left proposes segmenting the terms for the voluntary interruption of pregnancy due to rape

The Democratic Left (ID), this February 8, proposed dividing the maximum term for the voluntary interruption of pregnancy for girls, adolescents and women in case of rape into three groups.

At a press conference and with the presence of the party’s national president, Guillermo Herrera, former presidential candidate Xavier Hervas, and the caucus chief, Marlon Cadena, the Democratic Left affirmed that it promotes the decriminalization of abortion and proposes that the term be divided into three groups: girls up to 14 years of age, adolescents between 14 and 18 years of age and older than 18 years of age.

With this, the ID proposes that the interruption of pregnancy for girls up to 14 years of age can be given up to 20 weeks of gestation (5 months); on the other hand, for adolescents between 14 and 18 years of age, that the interruption may occur up to 18 weeks (4 and a half months); and for women over 18 years of age, up to 16 weeks of gestation (4 months).

Around this proposal, dialogues began with other political sectors that act in the National Assembly with the purpose of obtaining the 70 votes in favor of the bill that guarantees the voluntary interruption of pregnancy of girls, adolescents and women in case of rape, said the bench chief, Marlon Cadena.

Cadena pointed out that he has exhausted all internal dialogue resources to define a position on the interruption of pregnancy due to rape, and that he hopes that, in an organic and disciplined way, the ID will issue a unanimous vote.

The National Assembly discusses, since August 2021, the bill that guarantees the interruption of pregnancy in case of rape. For the second debate, the Justice Commission stated that the interruption of pregnancy could occur up to 22 weeks of gestation for girls and adolescents under 18 years of age; and up to 20 weeks of gestation for women over 18 years of age.

That report was questioned during the second debate in plenary, it did not obtain greater support and some observations were raised, for which the proponent of the text, Johanna Moreira (ID), requested eight days to adjust the text. That term expires on Thursday, February 10.

The temporality for the interruption of pregnancy due to rape will change in the final text of the bill

The second vice president of the Legislature, Yeseña Guamaní (ID), was in charge of showing the orange party’s proposal, as she said that, after an exercise in dialogue and as an element of consensus, it is proposed that the interruption of pregnancy be carried out between 16 and 20 weeks of gestation.

Regarding conscientious objection, another critical issue, the ID supports allowing doctors to decide individually about the interruption of pregnancy and that it be the health institution that guarantees a procedure.

Former presidential candidate Xavier Hervas maintained that during the presidential campaign he always pointed out that he is against the revictimization of women who have been violated, violated and who, as a result, have become pregnant. That it be the woman who decides whether or not she continues with the pregnancy and that the State does not criminalize her, he noted. (I)
