Russia is ready to grant political asylum to ex-president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a press conference after talks with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron.

Putin said that he offered political asylum to Poroshenko, even when he was president of Ukraine. According to him, Poroshenko then “was a lot of irony on this issue.” The Russian leader stressed that he “confirms his proposals, despite serious differences on the issue of settlement in Donbass.” According to him, Poroshenko “made a lot of mistakes in this direction.”

Nevertheless, Putin said, “his prosecution as a state criminal is an excessive bid for the success of the current leadership. [Украины]”.

Recall that in Ukraine, Poroshenko is suspected of high treason and assistance to terrorist organizations in the framework of the case of a criminal scheme for supplying coal from “temporarily occupied territories.” On January 19 of this year, the Pechersky District Court of Kiev chose a measure of restraint for him in the form of personal obligations with a restriction on travel abroad.

Earlier, Poroshenko called on Western countries to impose “hellish sanctions” against Russia if it decides to attack Ukraine.
