Since this week Cuenca, capital of Azuay, has a new tourist attraction. It is a natural viewpoint located in the Ictocruz community of the Turi parish, from which you can see the city at an angle of 180 degrees. The project is an initiative of the residents that gained strength with the support of the parish government.
Although Turi was already known nationally as “El Balco de Cuenca” for its terrace located in the parish center, from now on that name was strengthened by the new space located in the Ictocruz sector, also known as Las Antenas.
Cuenca: San Sebastian is a neighborhood of traditional trades
In a space of approximately 20 meters, a group of neighbors had a vision: to convert what until recently was a garbage dump into a space that promotes tourism and reactivates the local economy. Thus, in minga, they cleared the place of rubble and began to contribute financially to clean it up.
Among the decoration there is an element that stands out and was highlighted on social networks in recent days: the simulation of a hot air balloon located at a height of seven meters from the ground.
Precisely because of this curiosity, Sebastián Pineda, Anthonela Bustamante and Daniela Benenaula, three friends who took a break from their classes to get to know this place, arrived there on Monday morning. Although they imagined it bigger, it fulfilled their expectations and they immediately began taking photos to show them to their friends.
But on the site there is more to see, said Jorge Naranjo, administrator manager of the Ictocruz project, an altar in Cuenca. Among them, a frame for visitors to take a fun photo, some luminous letters with the word @ictocruz and a tomato-colored door that next to the knocker has the inscription “Open the doors to your dreams.”
When the door opens, a wide perspective is observed.
Edgar Luna, resident and director of the project, was pleased with this new tourist attraction, which is gradually changing their lives, since the sector has become more dynamic because there is benefit for all.
There are those who sell typical foods, crafts, clothing or traditional sweets such as espumilla, produced by their own hands.
For Paúl Pañi, president of the parish government, this project coincides with the 169 years of creation and generates an empowerment of the people who now proudly say: “I am from Turi!”. In the place there are four other similar spaces that also serve as trails for extreme sports.
For now, the viewpoint, located in the parish center, in front of the church, is undergoing renovations and is expected to reopen next August.
Cuenca was promoted in Guayaquil as a destination for the holiday
To get to the Ictocruz viewpoint, located in the east of Cuenca, you can take two paths. The shortest is accessing from the Gapal sector, crossing the roundabout of the Cuenca-Azogues expressway; and the second via Subida a Turi and turn left before reaching the parish center, you can be guided by the blue sign that reads Parque Ictocruz.
From the Historic Center, the traveler can spend an average of ten minutes in his private car and a taxi ride could cost between $3 and $3.50. For now there is no bus line service. (I)
