After seven hours of blockade, the E-35 road was reopened to vehicular traffic, at the height of Mascarilla, a town located on the interprovincial border between Imbabura and Carchi, in northern Ecuador.
This artery of the international Pan-American highway receives more than 18,000 vehicles daily and is the obligatory step for exports that enter from Colombia or imports that go to the neighboring country.
A protest demanding works blocks vehicular traffic between Imbabura and Carchi
More than 100 residents of the Chota, Carpuela, Mascarilla and Piquiucho valleys decided to take over this place and obstruct vehicular traffic, crossing cars, bushes and stones, starting at 07:00 this Monday, February 7.
More than 400 vehicles were stuck on both sides of the protest. Drivers and travelers were waiting for the opening of this section; while the residents demanded the fulfillment of committed works for these sectors.
On November 30, community members from Mascarilla blocked the two roads that connect the two northern provinces. After a day and a half of protest, Johnny Garrido, mayor of Mira, arrived at the site, where he offered some unfinished works, thus revoking the measure.
According to the leaders, the municipalities of Mira and Ibarra and the prefectures of Carchi and Imbabura have not complied with their offers, something that led them to take the measure. They requested the presence of the authorities.
After noon, the mayor Johnny Garrido (Mira), a delegate from the Municipality of Ibarra, among other authorities, arrived at the protest sector, who reached new agreements and with this vehicular traffic was resumed.
The Ibarra-Lita road, at the height of El Guadual, is closed to traffic due to landslides caused by heavy rains
One of the requests was the presence of machinery, which has already arrived in these towns, something that made it possible to immediately rehabilitate circulation between the two provincial jurisdictions.
It transpired that the machines will intervene several pieces of land in those localities, affected by the overflow of the Chota River, due to the strong and prolonged rainy season in that area, which has devastated crops and left the soil flooded. (I)
