Portoviejo
An assault on an armored vehicle that reached a bank in the center of Portoviejo generated a crossfire between the guards and alleged antisocials.
The incident occurred around 10:00 this Monday, February 7, on Paulo Emilio Macías Avenue and Av. Manabí, in the heart of Portoviejo, where an agency of a savings and credit cooperative is located.
Presumably, the guards of the armored vehicle tried to repel the crime by shooting at the alleged antisocials.
The crossing of bullets generated fear among the citizens, who put themselves in a safe place.
The antisocials fled the site, but three firearms and ballistic evidence were left behind at the scene.
After the incident, the staff of the banking agency was evacuated from the premises amid nervousness not only from them, but also from people who were walking near the banking agency at the time of the attempted assault.

Fabary Montalvo, commander(s) of subzone 13 of the Manabí police, indicated that everything related to this fact is being investigated, which also produced a serious head injury to one of the alleged criminals who participated in the gunfight.
The injured man was taken to a public hospital in Portoviejo, guarded by the police. The individual is in critical condition.
Montalvo pointed out that when a vehicle from the securities transfer company arrived at the savings cooperative agency to deliver a sum of money, the guards were intercepted by two subjects, who were traveling on a motorcycle.
“They subdue them and retain a backpack, upon seeing this situation there is an immediate action by one of the guards who was in the armored vehicle and who acts, and makes several detonations against the criminals, product of which there is a criminal who He finds himself with a wound in the parietal part of the skull and another wounded man who leaves the place,” said Montalvo.
Four would be the antisocials who participated in the event, said Montalvo, who did not give details of the amount that these people took.
After that fact, a persecution operation began by agents of the National Police that reached the San Pablo parish, north of Portoviejo. In this area raids were deployed to find those responsible for the robbery.
Agents seized several abandoned weapons in the area of the robbery, including a submachine gun, and a motorcycle on which the antisocials were mobilizing.
Last Saturday, six people were shot while attending the wake of a person who had also been violently murdered on January 29.
So far in 2022, 37 people have been murdered in Manabí, twelve of them —33% of the total crimes committed this year in the province— in Portoviejo. (I)
