A boy from the Awá community dies in a logging area

A 5-year-old boy died while trees were being cut for timber extraction in the Ojala region, in the Mataje parish, in San Lorenzo, on the northern border of Esmeraldas.

The accident occurred in this town inhabited mostly by the Awá indigenous nationality, confirmed Jairo Canticus, former president of the Mataje parish government.

“It happened around 08:00 on Thursday 21, when one of his older brothers went to knock down a tree to take out boards for his home and the youngest went back without anyone noticing,” said the former authority.

Then he was transferred by residents and friends on a stretcher made with tree branches and plastic to the Alto Tambo parish, in San Lorenzo.

The removal of the boy with low vital signs lasted about six hours on a muddy road. In a private vehicle they took him to the San Vicente De Paul Hospital, in Ibarra (Imbabura), where the doctors confirmed his death 45 minutes after his arrival.

Canticus insists to the Prefectures of Esmeraldas and Carchi the construction of neighborhood roads to be able to remove the sick or attend emergency situations. The claim belongs to the residents of Tarabita, Ojala and La Unión.

“They ask that an access road be built from Palo Amarillo to La Unión, which is the responsibility of the Prefecture of Esmeraldas and from Ojala to Tobar Donoso, due to his similarity from Carchi,” said the Awá leader.

The local road is necessary for the transfer of the sick, school supplies, food, agricultural products and wood (I)
