The Japanese government protested to Russia in connection with the firing in the southern part of the Kuril Islands, which should begin on February 8. This was stated by the Secretary General of the Cabinet of Ministers Hirokazu Matsuno, whose words are quoted by TASS.

At the same time, the coast guard of the Land of the Rising Sun issued a warning about the danger to navigation in the specified area.

The issue of the territorial affiliation of the South Kuriles and everything that happens on them has been one of the most painful topics for Tokyo for many decades. It is because of him that the Russian Federation and Japan cannot sign a peace treaty following the results of World War II, while Tokyo continues to consider the islands to be its northern territories, while Moscow does not recognize the very fact of a territorial dispute.

Meanwhile, a traditional protest action by far-right activists is taking place near the Russian embassy in Japan, associated with the so-called Day of the Northern Territories in memory of the first Russian-Japanese treaty signed on that day in 1855. Protesters wave Japanese flags and broadcast anti-war songs and marches.
