EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell said that the European Union is ready to respond to the rapid rise in gas prices, “accelerating” inflation, by reducing the “gas dependence” of the European Union on the Russian Federation. It is to this topic that the joint meeting of the EU-US Energy Council, scheduled for February 7, will be devoted.

It will be, in particular, the supply of American LNG to the EU countries.

“Energy policy is always of great importance in relations between the EU and Russia: more than 40% of EU gas imports come from Russia, and 60% of import revenues to Russia come from the EU,” stresses Borrell, who nevertheless acknowledges that the Russian “ Gazprom has fully fulfilled its obligations to supply natural gas to European countries.

Earlier, Borrell said that the EU and the US are ready to ensure the energy security of both Ukraine and Europe as a whole.

According to the head of European diplomacy, the EU is negotiating additional LNG supplies “in the coming months” not only with the United States, but also with other countries, in particular, with Azerbaijan, Algeria, Qatar and Norway.
