Germany, together with its allies, intends to take “necessary measures” against Russia in the event of an aggravation of the situation with Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in an interview with the Washington Post.

Thus, he commented on the question of whether the German authorities would stop the procedure for launching the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in the event of a “Russian invasion” of Ukraine. Scholz said he “won’t go into details” but noted that Germany “has a very clear agreement with the US government on gas transit and European energy sovereignty.” According to him, “in such a situation, all options are considered” and in the event of an escalation, “the answer will be unified and decisive.”

At the same time, Scholz added that “strategic uncertainty” is needed in the choice of specific measures. “This is important to make it clear that this will cost Russia very dearly – so that they cannot sit down at a computer and calculate whether it will not be too costly,” the chancellor explained.

Recall that earlier Scholz, before flying to Washington for a meeting with US President Joe Biden, said that Germany still adheres to the decision not to supply lethal weapons to Ukraine.
