Coronavirus continues to evolve in a certain direction and may become “more contagious, but less dangerous,” says virologist Petr Chumakov.
According to the specialist, the original “Wuhan” strain of coronavirus was “imperfect” and affected mainly the elderly, but after a chain of mutations, the virus adapted to the human population and can now infect a much wider population. Chumakov stressed that the main direction of the evolution of the virus was just “expanding the coverage,” RIA Novosti reports.
The omicron strain currently spreading is so contagious that it can “break through” the immunity of children. “This is a consequence of the fact that the virus has adapted to the human population,” the specialist emphasized. In his opinion, the evolution of the virus will continue in the same direction: the causative agent of the disease can become even more contagious, but at the same time lose the ability to cause significant harm to humans.
