In Ottawa, Canada, local authorities have declared a state of emergency to effectively counter anti-COVID protests, CTV reports.
According to Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, the introduced regime shows “the seriousness of the security threat that has arisen.” He stressed that the ongoing protests threaten the safety of citizens. In addition, the state of emergency implies seeking help from other government agencies.
We will remind, earlier Watson admitted that the situation with the protests is out of control. Several thousand truckers have been occupying the city center for more than a week, obstructing traffic and regularly making noise, honking their horns. At first, the city police did not take harsh measures against the demonstrators and only negotiated with them, but later the law enforcement officers changed tactics and began to issue fines for disturbing the public order. Now the authorities intend to introduce special measures to prevent the “reinforcement” of the demonstrators in the center of Ottawa, as well as to cut off their food and fuel supply lines.
