Portoviejo
Five were shot on the night of this Saturday, February 5, in the El Puño sector of the Fátima citadel, on the eastern outskirts of Portoviejo. The victims participated in a prayer in memory of Johnny Euclides Bowen Briones, who was murdered on January 29.
The first versions provided by the Police indicate that a double cab truck approached the place where people were praying in memory of the deceased Briones.
Some of these people were in the bucket of the truck and from there they fired about 50 shots, which caused the death of two people in the first instance. Four were injured.
A witness pointed out that as soon as the shots were heard, several of the people who were praying threw themselves to the ground, others tried to run and some even forced their neighbors’ houses to enter homes and thus save themselves from the bullets.
Even some witnesses said they had heard a sound similar to an explosive, but that was ruled out by the Police in the first instance.
Fabary Montalvo, chief(s) of the Manabí police subzone 13, indicated that two inert bodies remained at the scene, while four other injured people were taken to the Verdi Cevallos Balda hospital, a medical center that is located less than a kilometer from where this shooting took place.
“According to versions, they state that a double-cab van passed by, which was with personnel in the back of it, firing shots directly at the house where they were in the ninth of a relative who had died last week,” Montalvo advanced.
Unprecedented multiple murder in Santa Ana leaves fear in the public; of the 5 victims, 4 were from Manta
Andrés Merlo, head of Criminalistics of Manabí, pointed out that approximately 50 ballistic evidence was found at the scene, most of which were nine millimeter caliber.
“We did not raise any device of that type, the scene was processed,” said Merlo when asked if remains of an alleged explosive material were found at the crime scene, as indicated by some witnesses who would have heard material of these characteristics.
A video captured a few seconds after the massacre was released on social networks. Bodies stretched out and with traces of blood outside the house where the “Pachuco” prayer was held.
Chairs were left in disorder by people fleeing from the bullets. After the crimes, no one from the El Puño sector wanted to speak out and some were even hostile in the presence of police and other people outside the sector.
At the scene of the attack, Johnny Palma García, who was known as “Melena”, a bus driver from the Ciudad del Valle urban bus cooperative, and Ángel Reyes Zambrano died.
Four other people were taken seriously injured to the Portoviejo hospital. Two of them died a few minutes after entering that medical center: Ítalo Michael Mendoza Cedeño and César Andrés Mosquera Montalván.
Two other people underwent surgery, but early this Sunday, around 01:30, Johnny Paúl Bowen Zambrano, who is a relative of “Pachuco”, died. Jorge FBB was still fighting for his life in the Portoviejo hospital.
“Pachuco” was murdered in the El Guabito sector of Portoviejo when he was on his way to his home located in the El Puño sector. He had various backgrounds.
Enrique García Arteaga, prosecutor on duty in Portoviejo, arrived at the scene of the crime, who only indicated that they hoped to collect more information to issue a statement.
So far in 2022 in Manabí there have already been 34 violent deaths, an average of almost one person killed per day this year in the province. (I)
