The fall of stones on the road generated a new traffic accident on the highway via Cuenca – Molleturo – El Empalme, on the night of this Friday 22.
One person was injured in this incident, the second of its kind in less than eight days in that area. Last Sunday, a citizen died and three were injured after rocks fell into a truck.
Like last week, heavy rocks fell on a truck that was circulating at kilometer 47, despite the fact that the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) ordered the closure of this road in a statement issued at 18:36 of this Friday 22.
However, the ECU-911 reported at 18:00 this Friday that the road was enabled. This entity asked citizens to “drive with caution” between kilometers 49 and 104.
This lack of coordination between the two entities generated complaints on social networks.
The Cuenca Fire Department indicated that the injured person is 54 years old and was transferred to the Social Security hospital in that city, with slight blows to the head.
The MTOP indicated that vehicular circulation was closed at kilometer 49 of the road. “At the moment there is intense rain and thick fog, in addition to the constant fall of material from the slope,” published the State portfolio on Twitter.
He added that cleaning work will resume at 07:00 this Saturday.
This situation is recorded in the middle of a controversial week within the MTOP, as the district director of this agency, Fausto Zaldúa, assured that kilometer 49 of the Cuenca – Molleturo road was never declared in emergency as indicated by Minister Marcelo Cabrera on August 30.
