The head of the international historical and educational society “Memorial” (recognized in the Russian Federation as an NGO-foreign agent, the Supreme Court decided to liquidate it) Yan Rachinsky was summoned to the UK because of a check on the “rehabilitation of Nazism”. It is reported by RBC.
The reason for the check was the appeal of the all-Russian public movement “Veterans of Russia” to the Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov and the chairman of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin. The source of RBC noted that the check is carried out according to the message that the Memorial society is rehabilitating Nazism “by denying, deliberately suppressing and falsifying the facts of the crimes of Nazi accomplices, perpetuating their memory as victims of political repression in the USSR.”
For the rehabilitation of Nazism (Article 354.1. of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), a fine of up to 3 million rubles is threatened. or in the amount of salary for a period of up to three years, or forced labor for up to three years with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions, or imprisonment for the same period.
Earlier, Memorial filed an appeal against the decision of the Supreme Court to liquidate the organization, issued at the end of December 2021. As stated in the motivational part of the decision published on the website of the court, the decision to liquidate is due to the lack of publicity, misleading citizens, and creating obstacles to proper public control. At the same time, the court emphasizes that “gross violations of the law” were systemic and deliberate.
