The Balao River rose again in the last hours and complicated some neighborhoods and enclosures located on the margin of the estuary of this canton of Guayas.
Citizen reports indicated that the river overflowed and the water entered areas of the Barrio Nuevo early this Saturday morning.
Videos captured by citizens show how the river leaves the bed and the water enters the streets. The water entered homes in the lower areas of the canton.
Seeing that the river was overflowing, inhabitants of the neighborhoods at risk returned to remove their belongings to prevent them from being damaged. “From 07:00 the water rose. Last time it was faster (the entry of water), this time we began to raise things”, said an inhabitant of a flooded area.
María Fernanda Arámbulo, a journalist from Balao TV, explained that although the overflow was not of the same magnitude as last week, there were flooded sectors such as Barrio Nuevo and venues such as La Libertad and San Carlos.
Balao is declared in emergency after floods
The water in some sectors was up to the knees in some neighborhoods, although in others the water did not cover the ankles.
The Municipality of Balao moved canoes to the precincts to be able to attend to families that were affected.
During the morning of this Saturday, residents of Balao indicated that the tide was falling, which helped to prevent the river from overflowing with force.
Local media reported that Balao residents gathered in a minga this morning to remove the water and mud that remained in the streets.
Evacuations in Balao due to overflow of the river due to the rains
Last week, the canton suffered significant damage due to an overflow that flooded the entire town.
After the damage caused by the prolonged rain recorded between Thursday 27 and Friday 28, the Balao canton was declared an emergency by the Government of Guayas.
“In 23 years you haven’t seen that kind of flooding there. There are about 500 families in shelters. There are about 2,000 people,” explained Governor Pablo Arosemena on Friday in Guayaquil.
He mentioned that those affected asked him for food, mattresses and medicine and that this need continues. (I)
