The Prosecutor General’s Office of Kazakhstan is investigating more than 2,700 criminal cases following the results of the January unrest, more than 800 suspects are in custody. It is reported by Interfax-Kazakhstan.
As Yeldos Kilymzhanov, deputy head of the first service of the Prosecutor General’s Office, announced, 113 of those arrested have a criminal record, while some of them are representatives of radical religious movements.
“103 citizens were released from temporary detention centers, and preventive measures not related to strict isolation from society were applied to 91 persons,” added a representative of the Prosecutor General’s Office, indicating that law enforcement agencies are working to mitigate the previously applied preventive measures.
Mass unrest, which soon turned into pogroms and robberies, began in Kazakhstan shortly after the New Year. Rosbalt reported on both the losses suffered by businesses due to protests and the beatings suffered by protesters, including peaceful ones.
