The Russian authorities should reconsider their measures against the German television channel Deutsche Welle, said OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Teresa Ribeiro. She also urged Moscow to enable journalists to “fulfill their duties.”

According to the OSCE press service, Ribeiro noted that the punishment of journalists for political reasons “is disproportionate and contrary to the organization’s commitments regarding freedom of the media.”

“I call on the Russian authorities to ensure the right of media workers to play their important public role,” she said.

Earlier, the Moscow bureau of the Deutsche Welle TV channel was closed after the decision of the Russian authorities to stop its broadcasting. The measure was a response to the ban on broadcasting of the RT DE TV channel in Germany. It was also reported that the procedure for recognizing the channel in Russia as a foreign media agent would be initiated.

The measures against the DW channel are without any basis and complicate bilateral relations, the German Foreign Ministry said.
