Europe has hope to bring the spread of the coronavirus under control and achieve a “long period of calm,” said Hans Kluge, World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe.

According to the WHO representative, three conditions can provide this: high vaccination rates, the onset of spring, which is a more favorable season, and the less dangerous nature of the Omicron strain. As a result, Europe will enter a period of “high protection”, which will ensure that there are no outbreaks of coronavirus even if a more dangerous strain appears. “This period should be seen as a ‘ceasefire’ that can bring us a lasting peace,” said the head of the WHO European office.

At the same time, Kluge noted that in order to achieve stability, it is necessary to continue vaccination and revaccination, focus on protecting the most vulnerable segments of the population and strengthen epidemiological surveillance to identify new variants of coronavirus and assess their potential danger.
