Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will not take part in the Munich Security Conference this year. It is reported by “Kommersant”.
According to the newspaper’s source, “the minister has no plans to participate in the event.”
We add that the largest conference on Euro-Atlantic security is annually held in the capital of Bavaria.
In 2021, it did not take place due to the coronavirus pandemic, this time it will be held from February 18 to 20, but with a truncated number of participants and strict security measures.
The publication recalls that in previous years, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry almost always led the Russian delegation in Munich, except for 2007, when Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered the famous “Munich speech”, and 2016. That year, then-Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev flew to Munich.
Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov also said that Vladimir Putin would not take part in the conference this year.
Earlier, the chairman of the conference, the well-known German diplomat Wolfgang Ischinger, announced a “colossal” interest in the upcoming event from the United States, Russia and China. However, he explained, “in force of the situation in the world”, it will not be possible to fully satisfy the demand for participation in the Munich conference.
“Because of the coronavirus, we have to comply with numerous restrictions,” he explained.
