World food prices in January of this year continued to rise by 1.1% compared to the previous month, mainly due to a reduction in the supply of vegetable oils, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) records.
The FAO Food Price Index averaged 135.7 in January, renewing the highest level since April 2011. This index is used to track changes in international prices for the most traded food products.
At the same time, the organization emphasizes, “the average value of the FAO Vegetable Oil Price Index increased most significantly over the past month: after a slight decrease in December, it added 4.2 percent, reaching a new record level.”
In addition, the average value of the Dairy Price Index increased by 2.4%, marking the fifth straight month of growth in the index, with skimmed milk powder and butter the biggest increases.
Price indices for cereals and meat rose slightly in January. But the average value of the sugar price index at the end of the reporting period decreased by 3.1%.
