Tremor in northern Peru was perceived in Guayaquil and other cities in Ecuador

A strong tremor was felt on the morning of this Thursday, February 3, in Guayaquil and other cities in Ecuador.

The Geophysical Institute of Ecuador indicated that at 10:58 an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 was recorded, with a depth of 109.18 kilometers at 162.21 km from Moyabamba, San Martín region, in northern Peru.

Noticing the strong movement, residents of the center of Guayaquil left the shops and their houses.

On 9 de Octubre Avenue, dozens of workers lined the sidewalks and plazas.

The tremor was also felt in towns in several provinces such as Azuay, Manabí, Los Ríos, Loja, Sucumbíos and Tungurahua.

In Cuenca, for example, it was felt in sectors such as Feria Libre, Turi, Cuenca Azogues expressway, Control Sur, Totoracocha, Monay, El Valle and Jacaranda, indicated users on social networks.

The people of Manabi were scared again this Thursday after the strong shaking that lasted for several seconds.

In some cantons, in the midst of fear, people evacuated their homes and located themselves on the sidewalks of various streets as a preventive measure. No structural damage reported at this time.

The Risk Management Service of Ecuador explained that the earthquake does not meet the necessary conditions to generate a tsunami on the coast of Ecuador, according to a report by the Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute of the Navy (Inocar).

The Risk Service explained that the Adverse Event Monitoring Units carry out a sweep of information to find out about possible damages in the national territory.
