The traditional carnival proclamation and artistic and cultural acts that take place during the carnival holiday were suspended by the Municipality of Esmeraldas, to avoid new infections of COVID-19 in that town.

The announcement was made by Mayor Lucía Sosa, as a precautionary measure for the health of the Esmeralda population and said that she will abide by the provisions of the national Emergency Operations Committee (COE).

“I hope that the pandemic goes down and that it even recently affected my health, but I am recovering,” said the municipal authority.

COVID cases increase in Esmeraldas

He indicated that the previous weekend four people died in the Esmeraldas hospital, due to this disease, one of them Marco Moreno, former provincial councilor and livestock leader.

Almost 80% of municipal employees were also infected with the virus, Sosa said, adding that there are still employees of this institution who do not apply the vaccines.

According to the epidemiological report of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), until February 1, the province of Esmeraldas had 13,171 cases of coronavirus. Of that figure, 7,155 correspond to the city of Esmeraldas, a town that, being the provincial capital, has the highest rate of contagion.

Until Monday, January 17, at the Sur Esmeraldas Delfina Torres hospital there were 11 patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 10 hospitalized, with an average of 40 people a day in the Triage area, said Jenny Pozo, manager of this house. assistance.

The mayor of Esmeraldas announced that a disinfection campaign will be carried out in the ICU and hospitalization areas at the Delfina Torres hospital. In these tasks, she said, uniformed personnel from the Fire Department and other institutions will participate.

Until Tuesday of this week, the cantons of Esmeraldas, Rioverde and Atacames were at a low level of epidemiological risk, according to the traffic light established by the Ministry of Public Health. These jurisdictions were declared a yellow traffic light in recent days.

The mayor of Atacames, Freddy Saldarriaga, said that he will also abide by the provisions of the national COE, but he hopes that this body will not make last-minute decisions that affect tourism during the holidays.

For this reason, he insisted on compliance with biosecurity standards and the capacity in hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
