Several detonations from inside the Litoral Penitentiary were reported on the afternoon of this Wednesday, February 2.
Given the alert, reported around 2:30 p.m., police officers moved to the prison to attend to the emergency.
In several videos shared on social networks, the activation of long weapons used by inmates inside the prison is heard.
At 4:00 p.m., the SNAI, the entity in charge of the prison system, confirmed that there were clashes between pavilions. “We coordinate with @PoliceEcuador @FFAAECUADOR the entry of elite groups to reinforce security, complying with the protocols and in strict respect for the rights of those deprived of liberty”, he indicated in a message shared on social networks.
According to a preliminary report, inmates are involved in incidents in pavilions 2, 3, 9 and 12.
Faced with the prison crisis, last December, the President of the Republic, Guillermo Lasso, signed an executive decree for the creation of the Commission for Prison Dialogues and Pacification, to initiate a process of pacification in the country’s social rehabilitation centers, which last year they had more than 330 people deprived of liberty murdered.
This measure was applied days after the last massacre that left more than a hundred inmates murdered. (I)
