The Holocaust was “the inhuman treatment of one group of white people towards another, but there was no racial overtones in it.” This opinion was expressed by American actress Whoopi Goldberg and was subjected to a flurry of criticism.

The actress made the controversial statement while discussing Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel Maus on The View. “The Holocaust is not a matter of race. This is a question about the inhuman crimes of some white people in relation to others. It doesn’t matter if you are black or white, because both blacks and whites, Jews, Italians, it doesn’t matter, everyone eats each other, ”said Goldberg, participating in the discussion.

During the conversation, she once again repeated her position. “Let’s be honest. The Holocaust does not deal with racial issues. No, it’s not about race,” the actress added.

After the show, a wave of angry comments from netizens hit her. Even the head of the human rights organization Anti-Defamation League, Jonathan Greenblatt, spoke out. “No Whoopi Goldberg, the Holocaust was about the Nazis’ systematic extermination of the Jewish people, who they considered an inferior race,” he tweeted.

The actress had to apologize for her words. “I am sorry for the pain I caused. I have always supported and will continue to support the Jewish people,” Goldberg wrote on her Web page, and the US Holocaust Museum emphasized that “racism was central to Nazi ideology,” “Jews were defined not by religion, but by race, and Nazi racist beliefs fueled genocide and massacres, the Air Force quotes.

Despite the star’s apologies, the American television channel ABC suspended her from their broadcast for two weeks. Goldberg is one of the hosts of The View talk show.
