The meeting of the UN Security Council, held on January 31, was “an important step to deter a new wave of Russian armed aggression against Ukraine,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
As emphasized in the department, the results of the meeting “showed the principled position of the overwhelming majority of UN Security Council members on the unacceptability of an unprecedented buildup of Russian offensive weapons, forces and means on the Ukrainian-Russian and Ukrainian-Belarusian borders.”
The document also cites the words of the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the organization, Serhiy Kyslytsya, who said that Ukraine does not plan any offensive operations either in the zone of the Ukrainian-Russian armed conflict in Donbass or on the border with the Russian Federation and will do everything possible to “prevent any provocations from Russia.” As reported, during the meeting, representatives of Ukraine demanded from the Russian Federation “confirmation by practical actions of Russian statements about the absence of intentions to expand armed aggression against Ukraine”, meaning by actions “the withdrawal of troops and a ceasefire.”
We will remind, earlier the US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said that if Russia really invades the territory of Ukraine, then “the consequences will be terrible.”
