Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is not in line with the EU’s energy policy aimed at decarbonization, European Commission Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis said during a visit to Kiev.

According to RBC, Dombrovskis noted that at present the situation with the gas pipeline has been “paused”. According to him, the European Commission checks the compliance of the project with the requirements of the EU energy legislation.

The politician also said that “any project relating to gas supplies to Europe should not be put into effect due to the fact that Ukraine will lose at least some part of its position as a gas transit country.” He noted that Brussels is considering whether Russia is violating EU market principles “with its whims regarding gas contracts.”

Dombrovskis promised that the EU would do everything to ensure that the Russian side “could not use gas as a weapon.” The Kremlin has repeatedly denied such allegations.
