Re-infections with coronavirus are associated with the emergence of its new variants. This was stated in an interview with RIA Novosti by a virologist, head of the laboratory of bionanotechnology, microbiology and virology at Novosibirsk State University Sergey Netesov.

According to him, the delta strain is more strongly excreted by infected people, and omicron is even worse prevented by vaccines.

Netesov explained that new variants of COVID-19 have arrived that overcome vaccine immunity, especially in those who have been vaccinated for a long time, Lenta.ru reports.

The virologist pointed out that it is indeed possible to re-infect with the omicron strain, but it has already been noted that, firstly, those who have been vaccinated for a long time, and secondly, those who have been vaccinated with just two injections, get sick.

We will remind, earlier Netesov did not rule out that the fifth wave of coronavirus in Russia will last up to four months. “We have to prepare for the worst. Moreover, this wave will be long – for two, three or four months. In our country, collective immunity is still very small – less than 60%, ”the expert stated.

According to him, the rapid spread of the new strain of coronavirus “omicron” (as of January 27, already recorded in 74 regions of the Russian Federation) is associated with its features – faster reproduction and overcoming vaccine protection.

At the same time, the virologist warned that the fifth wave of coronavirus may well not be the last, since the variability of the virus is far from exhausted.
