Balao is declared in emergency after floods

Provincial authorities indicated that there are at least 500 affected families.

After the damage caused by the prolonged rain recorded between Thursday 27 and Friday 28, the Balao canton was declared an emergency by the Government of Guayas.

Early this Friday, the overflow of the river was reported in the Balao Grande sector, at the height of the stadium. The Barrio Nuevo, Santa Teresita, 17 de Noviembre and Brisas del Mar sectors, in the urban area; and the San Carlos, Las Violetas and Beatriz II campuses were flooded.

Provincial authorities indicated that at least 500 families (2,000 people) were affected due to the floods in this canton of Guayas.

Members of the Ecuadorian Army evacuate the victims to shelters installed in the canton. They also protect homes to prevent criminal acts.

Personnel from the National Risk and Emergency Management Service delivered food kits, essential supplies and mattresses to the affected citizens.

According to the authorities, this is the most serious flood recorded in the canton in the last 23 years.

With machinery from the Prefecture of Guayas, repair work was carried out on the walls that border the Balao River to control flooding.

Ten dump trucks and an excavator were used to carry out these tasks, on the afternoon of this Friday the 28th.

Likewise, with machinery from the Ministry of Transport and Public Works (MTOP), tasks were carried out to open roads flooded by the current of the river. (I)
