The first weeks presented more sunny days than in previous years. The Inamhi explains that the rainy season has been unusual.
The last days of January, the weather in Quito has been cold and rainy. During the early morning is when the lowest temperatures have been recorded: in the northern zone between 9 and 11 degrees were reported, while in the southern zone between 6 and 8 degrees, according to the National Institute of Hydrology and Meteorology (Inamhi). In other words, in the southern neighborhoods of the capital it feels colder.
On Thursday there was precipitation during the match between the teams of Ecuador and Brazil. This Friday, January 28, there were also heavy rains.
The parking lots of the El Tejar Shopping Center, located in the historic center, were filled with water. The Fire Department responded to the scene to evacuate the liquid. On Thursday there was also accumulation of water due to the storm.
Due to the low temperature of the environment, people wear warmer clothing (sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves). The Inamhi predicted that the weather will remain in the same conditions until the end of the month.
The situation was different in the first weeks of January: there were more sunny, hot days. Between January 15 and 20, temperatures between 24 and 25 degrees were recorded, according to Inamhi.
Vladimir Arreaga, forecast analyst, points out that it is currently going through the rainy season, so in January the rainfall should be constant. However, this year the season has been atypical, causing the level of rainfall to be less than last year, said the technician.
“For example, what should normally rain in the south in January is approximately 133 millimeters, but at the moment we have recorded 81 millimeters. This means that we reached 61%. It is quite an unusual situation. The circulation of the wind has been varied, that is why we fear this climate in Quito”, explained Arreaga. (I)
