The German government has declared a Russian diplomat persona non grata, who will be expelled from the country due to suspicions of espionage.

According to the magazine Der Spiegel, we are talking about an employee of the Russian consulate in Munich. The man is believed to have been accredited as a diplomat, but is believed in Germany to be in fact a member of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Interfax reports.

At the same time, it is indicated that the identity of the diplomat allegedly surfaced as part of the investigation into the espionage case of Russian citizen Ilnur N., who was detained in Germany on June 18, 2021, TASS notes.

Recall, the day before, the German Prosecutor General’s Office brought charges against a Russian citizen of working for Russian intelligence — the Russian Ilnur N. was officially accused of espionage on December 9, 2021, but was arrested in June 2021.

Prior to his arrest, he worked as a researcher at a university in Bavaria. According to the prosecutor’s office, the intelligence service’s interest was, in particular, in the various stages of development of the European Ariane launch vehicle and other aerospace equipment.
