Data reveals that more than 29% of Ecuadorian women with breast cancer died in 2020

Specialists advise being part of preventive tests: “It is an annoying test, but the results are valuable.”

More than 29% of women who were diagnosed with breast cancer died in 2020, according to data from the Global Cancer Observatory presented this Thursday at an event on the subject held in Quito.

Over the past year in Ecuador, a total of 3,563 women were diagnosed with breast cancer according to the observatory, which, however, highlights the importance of lifestyle in prevention by recording that 13% of cases worldwide it can be avoided with constant physical exercise.

“The challenge should be to diagnose it early,” explained Roche gynecologist Ximena Zurita, in a presentation sponsored by the pharmaceutical company in the Ecuadorian capital.

He insisted on the need for self-examination and adequate guidance from a “trusted doctor” and when suspected, the first step is to visit the gynecologist for a physical examination, which may be an ultrasound or sonography for the youngest.

“It is an annoying test, but the results are valuable,” Zurita said.

The specialists wanted to make it clear today that when the disease has appeared in relatives, the probability of suffering from it increases between 5% to 10%, and they advocated breaking the “myths” around this issue with proven information.

In addition to self-examination, exercise and a balanced diet, it is vital to pay attention to symptoms such as the presence of a lump or thickening in an area, a change in the size or appearance of the breast, peeling, scabs or shedding of the skin, redness or small holes in the breast.

On the occasion of World Breast Cancer Day on October 19, the pharmaceutical company promotes throughout the month an alliance with the professional soccer team Ñañas and its campaign “Decide for you, that cancer does not win the game”, with which also seeks to delve into the prevention of cervical cancer, the second cause of death among women in Ecuador.

This agreement will be in force until next February to spread the message of “empowering women’s health” and save lives. (I)
