US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan on Wednesday evening brought to the Foreign Ministry a written response from Washington to Moscow’s demands for security guarantees. It is reported by “Kommersant”.
The diplomat, as specified, delivered two documents: one from the United States, the second from NATO.
Leaving the building of the Russian Foreign Ministry, John Sullivan refrained from commenting on the media.
At the end of 2021, Russia presented the United States with a vision of security in Europe and stated that it was waiting for written answers from the American side to its proposals. The United States is invited to: commit itself to preventing NATO expansion to the east, stop military cooperation with the post-Soviet countries, remove its nuclear weapons from European territory and not place any strike systems there that could threaten Russia. There are 8 articles in the draft treaty in total.
On Wednesday afternoon, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said that answers to some proposals were received orally. He did not provide answers. Grushko said that against the proposals of the Russian Federation “point by point it is impossible to object.”
At the same time, he added that the proposals of the Russian Federation “open a direct path to movement in the right direction, including in the matter of returning the construction of global security, taking into account the security interests of others.”
It is known that the United States briefed the Ukrainian authorities on the content of its response to Russia’s proposals on security guarantees and added Kiev’s opinion to the document.
