London police have launched an investigation into violations by Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other officials of quarantine restrictions. This is reported by the British edition of The Independent.
Scotland Yard reports that the events that took place on Downing Street in the past two years will be investigated. In particular, according to ITV News, in June 2020, up to 30 people attended a cabinet meeting, including the Prime Minister’s wife, Carrie Johnson. Boris Johnson himself clarifies that the investigation “will help give the public the necessary clarity” and “draw the line.” Downing Street, meanwhile, claims staff members “gathered briefly in Cabinet after the meeting to wish the Prime Minister a happy birthday” and Mr Johnson was present for “less than ten minutes”.
In parallel, a government commission led by Sue Gray is conducting its investigation. It is reported that the results of this check, most likely, will not be made public while investigative measures are underway.
Previously, Boris Johnson was accused of “failing” the fight against coronavirus. His ratings fell to record lows after the premier’s staff were accused of participating in a banned Christmas party in the midst of yet another coronavirus lockdown in late 2020.
