PORTOVIEJO

Six bullet wounds received Sandro Rafael Arteaga Quiroz, 44 years old, in a hitman-style attack recorded last Monday afternoon in the San Clemente community, located in the Sucre canton, in the north of Manabí.

The attack occurred when the victim was preparing to buy salt in a business in that town of Manabi.

Arteaga was traveling from Portoviejo with his son to the north of the coastal province. According to initial inquiries, he had made a stop in the “Y” sector of San Clemente with the intention of buying a sack of salt.

Arteaga was intercepted by three people traveling on a motorcycle. At that moment the attack took place that caused the death of the man instantly.

Marcos Argüello, head of the Police district of Sucre and San Vicente, pointed out that the perpetrators of this crime fled the scene after committing the act and a few steps left the motorcycle on which they were traveling.

Two alleged criminals were burned in Bahía de Caráquez

Police agents estimate that, after abandoning the motorcycle, the antisocials would have boarded a car, in which they moved further away from the area where the hitman took place.

“The victim has received several bullet wounds, so the investigative units are already carrying out the procedures that the case warrants,” Argüello stated.

Arteaga’s death dismayed his relatives, who arrived at the scene of the incident a few minutes after the crime was committed.

He worked in the Prefecture of Manabí, where he was currently the general secretary of the Road Operators and Equipment Union, and had even been a critic of the administration of the current prefect of this province.

His violent death generated the claim of labor leaders at the national level such as Nelson Erazo, national president of the Popular Front, who in a statement and note of regret at the same time repudiated Arteaga’s crime, of whom he said “he was a tireless fighter in defense of the rights of workers and a reference in the social struggle”.

Arteaga’s crime is the 21st recorded violent death in Manabí in the first 24 days of January; almost on average one murder per day in this province.

With this violent death, at the moment in Manabí there have already been 11% of murders in relation to all the crimes reported in 2021, when 197 people were murdered in this province. (I)
