NATO may, in the interests of security, increase its presence in Eastern Europe through new “battlegroups”. This statement was made today by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

According to him, the deployment of additional troops will take place in accordance with international obligations.

Stoltenberg stressed that NATO will not threaten Russia and is ready to continue negotiations to reduce tension on the borders of Ukraine.

The head of NATO also promised to strengthen cooperation with Sweden and Finland and recalled that these countries have every right to determine their own future, “and not Russia and not anyone else.”

We add that the topic of NATO expansion has been more than relevant since December 2021. Then the Russian Foreign Ministry published drafts of a bilateral treaty on security guarantees and an agreement on measures to ensure the security of the Russian Federation and the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance, transferred by the United States. In particular, they stated that the United States must assume obligations to exclude further expansion of NATO in an easterly direction, to refuse to accept the former republics of the USSR, and now independent states, into the alliance.

In addition, it was also about the non-deployment of the Russian Federation and NATO countries of their armed forces and weapons on the territory of other European states in addition to the forces that were already on this territory as of May 27, 1997.
