Government reports on terrorist attack against official who works in Zaruma to cover sinkhole caused by illegal mining

Residents of an area of ​​Zaruma woke up at midnight on Sunday by a loud noise. Neighbors said that the loud sound shook the windows and part of the structures.

The explosion occurred in the garage of a worker who works on the sinkhole remediation project that was formed last December, in the center of the Orense canton.

Vinicio Rogel, a resident of the Limoncito sector, in the Zaruma canton, said that the noise shook windows and walls. When they went out to observe, they found that the vehicle of W. Apolo, who provides services in the remediation work, was partially destroyed.

When the residents checked around the vehicle, they realized that it was an explosive material that had been used.

The car was left with damage to the engine, tires, windows and other parts. There was also evidence of material damage in the house that did not represent a risk of collapse, it was reported.

After the procedures carried out by the police units, the vehicle was transferred to the Judicial Police of the Zaruma canton, while the investigations continue to determine the person or persons allegedly responsible for this act.

The Government Minister, Alexandra Vela, described the incident as terrorist attack against one of the public workers who are in charge of covering the sinkhole produced in that city as a result of the activities of illegal minery.

The minister expressed that the investigations must advance to determine those responsible and the type of explosive used; that it is clear that there is a confrontation between those who carry out illegal mining and those who carry out legal activity; and that the crime of illegal mining is related to the trafficking of weapons, explosives and people.

The Government has filed complaints because direct accesses have been found from the houses to the galleries.
