The global coronavirus pandemic could end as early as 2022, says Vladislav Zhemchugov, an immunologist and specialist in especially dangerous infections.

According to the expert, the “task” of the Omicron coronavirus strain is a massive “seeding” of the planet without numerous deaths, RIA Novosti reports. As a result, the immunologist said, the virus will “find” a new host, as humanity has formed an inhibitory herd immunity. After that, a new naturally focal infection is formed, similar, for example, to Ebola.

“I believe that on a planetary scale within a year this will end unequivocally, even reaching the most distant islands in the Pacific Ocean,” Zhemchugov added.

He also added that in the situation with “omicron” the most important thing is to differentiate diseases in the early stages, so that patients with a mild course of the disease can be treated on an outpatient basis, at home, and the healthcare system is not overloaded with “excessive” hospitalization. Also, according to him, in Russia it is difficult to predict the exact dates for the end of a new wave of coronavirus due to specific transport links within the country, which mainly go through Moscow.
