NATO cannot guarantee Russia non-expansion of the alliance, including to the east. This was stated by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in an interview with the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.

So, answering the question whether there can be guarantees of non-expansion of NATO, he said: “The entry of new countries of Eastern Europe into NATO is not on the agenda at all now. Why is this demand from Russia? There can be no such guarantee.

At the same time, Scholz made it clear that the alliance is “necessary” because the countries that are members of NATO unite their “security interests,” TASS reports.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken indicated that Washington will not compromise on NATO’s open door policy in Russia’s security responses, Lenta.ru notes.

And earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the members of the North Atlantic Alliance confirmed the NATO open door policy and the intention to protect each other in the event of an armed conflict.

We add that former NATO Secretary General Jap De Hop Scheffer urged the West not to give in to Russia’s demands in the field of security in order to prevent Russian President Vladimir Putin’s plans to “build a superpower.”
