There is a change of Commander of the National Police. Tannya Varela leaves and Carlos Cabrera enters in her place, says the president.

The insecurity that haunts Guayaquil forced national and local authorities to meet to decide on the measures to take in the face of the wave of murders, robberies and other crimes that have occurred in this city in recent hours.

The President of the Republic Guillermo Lasso; the mayor of Guayaquil, Cynthia Viteri; the Minister of Government, Alexandra Vela, and other authorities met this afternoon in the Government of Guayas.

After this appointment, Lasso made a pronouncement around 5:00 p.m. this Sunday. The President associated the crime wave that is taking place in the streets to a dispute over territories and settling accounts of gangs that have lost control of drug trafficking.

The President maintained that the achievements in drug seizures have reduced the territories of the mafias.

He indicated that in 2021, 210 tons of drugs were seized and in the three weeks of 2022, 15 tons of cocaine have been seized, triple that of January 2021. In addition, drug trafficking through the port was reduced in these weeks due to the installation of an anti-narcotics center.

“All these achievements have reduced the territory of the mafias, where they acted without the presence of the State, however, these actions have consequences such as the increase in violent deaths in the streets as has happened in January, where the settling of accounts is the effect of these seizures that generate losses to the transnational mafias”, he justified.

The President said that they will block the way for organized gangs and to reinforce security with immediate actions, he has arranged for the Deputy Minister of the Interior, Max Campos, to move to Guayaquil, to the Model Barracks, to become an operations center and direct citizen security. from all over the country from Guayaquil.

He will coordinate the presence of 1,100 additional police officers to those who are in Guayaquil.

It will coordinate with the Armed Forces its presence in the streets. The Minister of Defense has ordered the operations with the military to start at 5:00 p.m. this Sunday the 23rd.

The Armed Forces will also reinforce border controls. “The Armed Forces will further strengthen control throughout the border cord to prevent drug trafficking from the north and weapons from the south,” he announced.

President Guillermo Lasso indicated that they want to take on the challenge of insecurity together, for which he thanked Mayor Cynthia Viteri for her willingness to collaborate in this situation.

In addition, the President announced $9 million that will be used for Police equipment; cars, motorcycles and weapons.
