World Health Organization (WHO) expert Maria van Kerkhove said that future strains of coronavirus could be more infectious than omicron with a high probability. It is reported by TASS.
“The more this virus circulates, the more opportunities it has to change… Omicron will not be the last option we will discuss,” she said.
The expert emphasized that it is likely that future variants of the coronavirus will need to surpass those that are currently common. The new strains may cause diseases of “greater or lesser severity”, but will also be able to avoid the “counterattack” of the immune system.
Earlier, the specialist explained why the pandemic is unlikely to end with Omicron.
Prior to this, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the next strain of coronavirus could be worse than “omicron”. He stressed the importance of continuing the global vaccination campaign, which is still lagging behind its targets.
