Roskosmos placed in its Twitter a photograph of what was left of the island of Tonga after the eruption of the underwater volcano Hunga Haapa in the Pacific Ocean. The photo taken from space shows the border of the island before the eruption and the piece of land that remains there now. The Russian satellite “Kanopus-V” monitors the consequences of a natural disaster on the island.

Recall that the powerful eruption of the underwater volcano Hunga-Haapai, which lasted several days, and the tsunami provoked by it, led to large-scale destruction in the island Kingdom of Tonga. So, local authorities evacuated the head of the island state Tupou VI from the royal palace in the capital city of Nuku’alofa.

According to the Geological Survey of Tonga, the volcanic eruption was the largest since December 2021 and caused a number of small tsunamis recorded off the coast of Tongatapu, the largest island in the archipelago.

The government of the country confirmed that as a result of the rampant elements, the entire residential infrastructure of the Mango and Atata islands, where about 150 people lived, was completely destroyed, but so far only three people are among the dead, the fate of the rest remains unknown.
